NHS Wheelchair Services are run by local health authorities. They are responsible for allocating funds to the Wheelchair Service and Primary Care Trusts who are responsible for providing the service itself, which means there is potential to be a small amount of variation between the services depending on where you live, and which ‘wheelchair service’ you access. For information on wheelchair services in Portsmouth click here.
The general rule is that wheelchair services will fund the chair and a tray if required, but any other accessory such as a rain cover will need to be funded and bought by the parent. In rare circumstances such as when a child has a condition causing them to be ‘allergic’ to the rain, some Wheelchair services may fund a rain cover.
It may be possible to get charity funding for accessories too. Click here for more information.
